Komatsu’s 2026 Safety Coin
This year’s Safety Coin was created to honour a milestone that reflects the heart of our culture: all three regions across Canada (Goderich, Sudbury and Saskatoon) achieving 10 years injury‑free. Reaching a decade without injury is more than a statistic, it represents countless daily decisions, conversations, and commitments to looking out for one another. With such a significant achievement to celebrate, every detail of the 2026 coin was intentionally crafted to symbolize the dedication, teamwork, and shared vigilance that brought us here. From concept to final design, each element was chosen with purpose, ensuring the coin stands as a lasting reminder of the standard we’ve set together and the responsibility we carry forward.
Our Design Story
FRONT OF THE COIN
The front of the 2026 Safety Coin highlights a remarkable achievement: more than 10 years injury‑free across all three regions. Its design focuses on the guiding behaviours and shared commitment that made this milestone possible. At the center is the Safety Compass, chosen for its symbolism of direction, grounding, and staying true to purpose, principles that have shaped a decade of safe work. Each compass point represents one of the core safety behaviours that guide decision‑making every day, forming the “true north” that keeps teams aligned, aware, and accountable.
Surrounding the compass are design elements that reflect both the identity of the regions and the environment in which this success was built. The flowing ribbon of the Aurora Borealis stretches across the upper portion of the coin, capturing the colour, energy, and movement that define life in the North. Its presence connects the milestone to the landscapes where employees live and work, adding a sense of pride and vibrancy to the coin’s story.
Anchoring the lower section is the silhouette of a mine headframe, a clear nod to the underground mining industry at the heart of these operations. The headframe ties the compass back to the realities of daily work, grounding the design in the environments.
Together, the compass, aurora, and headframe create a unified front design, one that not only commemorates a decade injury‑free but also reflects the discipline, heritage, and shared purpose that made it possible.
BACK OF THE COIN
While the front of the 2026 Safety Coin highlights the discipline, behaviours, and shared commitment that led to more than ten years injury‑free, the back reveals what those efforts ultimately protect: one another, our future, and the journey still ahead. Where the front is bold and celebratory, the back is reflective and symbolic, representing the ongoing nature of our safety path and the responsibility carried every day.
At the center of the design is the guiding message: “Set your bearings. Adjust your heading. Stay the course.” Just as a compass only functions when its bearing is established, navigation begins at 0 degrees—True North. On the coin, the 0‑degree mark is placed at the summit of the mountain, reminding us that safety starts with establishing the right direction before taking the first step. Encircling this scene is a dotted ring that mirrors a compass bezel, creating a visual link to the compass on the front and reinforcing the idea that progress in safety relies on deliberate alignment and continuous recalibration.
Above the mountain sits the True North star, representing both the physical reality of working in the North, and the principle that guides every safety decision. True North symbolizes an unwavering priority: ensuring the well‑being of our people. It stands as the anchor point for the choices and actions that sustain long‑term safety performance.
Below, three miners are shown from behind, each positioned at the base of a unique path. These figures symbolize the three Canadian Komatsu regions. Though their routes differ, all paths rise toward the same summit, illustrating that despite varying starting points and site‑specific challenges, the shared compass leads to one outcome, a safe result for everyone. The upward trails also acknowledge that even after a decade injury‑free, the climb is far from over. Safety remains a continuous ascent requiring focus, unity, and resilience.
The surrounding landscape reflects a Northern environment, with a nighttime sky and falling snowflakes grounding the design in the regions where this achievement was made. These elements capture the realities of long winters, remote terrain, and the northern conditions that shape daily work. The Maple Leaves in the banner honour employees across the country whose dedication made the milestone possible.
At the bottom, the banner reading “SLQDC True North Strong” ties the design to the organization’s core priorities. Safety & Health, Law, Quality, Delivery, and Cost form the hierarchy that guides decision‑making. Placed here, this statement connects the coin’s message of strength and unity to the principles that keep teams disciplined, aligned, accountable, and proudly Canadian.
Together, these elements create a back design that reflects not only where the safety journey has taken us, but where it will continue to lead.
